The problem is that many online pharmacies do not require a prescription, so people can purchase the pills themselves, without having to visit a doctor or visit a physical pharmacy.
“When people order from online sources, they usually get cheaper than in-person visits,” says David Chua, a co-founder and chief executive of Bausch Health Solutions, a global health care provider organization.
In the U. S., about half of Americans buy a pill online. Bausch Health Solutions estimates that between 20 and 40 percent of Americans buy prescription medications online.
But Chua says that may be a problem for Americans who live outside the U. S., where prescription drug prices are higher.
“It’s not just about price — it’s about access,” says Chua, who has worked at two U. S. health care organizations — the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse — about 10 percent of the nation’s total adult prescription drug spending.
Chua and his colleagues say that while Americans may be able to save money by buying a variety of drugs online, they are not alone.
“It’s not just about price; it’s about access,” says Chua, who notes that most online pharmacies are not meant to sell prescription drugs in person, but to sell them directly to people who can get them for free.
Bausch Health Solutions says it sells drugs for as little as $20 a month in the U. S., although that’s only for a limited number of drugs.
“In the U. S., if you look at the total spending, the number of people who take these drugs is almost three times higher than it is in the U. S.,” Chua says. “It’s just about access.”
Chua says that while Americans may be able to save money by buying a variety of drugs online, they are not alone.
“People are being denied access to medicines,” says Chua, adding that people need access to care for conditions they may not otherwise have. “If you’re going to buy medicines online, then you have to ask a doctor, so there is no way of knowing.”
